St. Joe’s hospital is losing millions and playing hardball with Excellus. Patients are caught in middle: St. Joseph’s Health has lost $100 million over the past five years and says it needs a significant rate hike from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield to stabilize one of Syracuse’s three major hospitals. Excellus says that’s too much to ask from one insurer, and that raising rates would only increase costs for more than 35,000 Central New Yorkers who use the insurance and get treated at St. Joe’s.
WellNow, Excellus reach a new deal: WellNow and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield agreed on a new contract Monday, ending a stalemate that has blocked Excellus members from in-network access to WellNow’s urgent care centers for the past 10 months. Here’s what the deal means for patients.
